Skillspost - summarizing and paraphrasing

1. Paraphrase (From the handout)
    Original text : Shark Attacks
It is more likely that you will be struck by lightning. In the coastal states of the U.S., about 180 people are struck by lightning every year, but only about 11 people are attacked by sharks. Of those 11 attacks, chances are that only one of them will be fatal.

Notes : coastal states of the U.S, 180 people, being strucked by lightening, 11 people, being attacked by sharks, only one of 11 will be fatal, every year, more likely to be strucked by lightning than to be attacked by sharks.

Paraphrased Text : Every year, in the coastal states of the U.S., about 180 people were strucked by lightning and 11 people were attacked by sharks. This shows us that we are more likely to be strucked by lightning than to be attacked by sharks.

2. Summarize (From the handout)
    Original text : Bear Attacks
When people go hiking in the back woods of North America, they might experience some fear of being attacked by a bear.

Although it is possible that you will be attacked, it is extremely improbable. In fact, chances are will be more afraid of you and go away by itself.

It is more likely that you will die in a car crash on your way to the back woods than by being attacked by a bear.

In the Yellostone National Park in the U.S., statistics show that you are more likely to drown than to be attacked by a bear. In the period between 1839 and 1994, 101 people died from drowning but only 5 people were killed by grizzly bears.

However, if you are still worried about bear attacks, there are several ways to reduce the chances of being attacked by a bear.

Traveling in groups is one way to reduce the chances. Bears are very unlikely to attack groups of four or more people. Also, stay calm if you likey to attack if you try to run away.

Summarized Text : In the back woods of North America, people might be attacked by bears, but it is almost impossible. In the statistics from the Yellowstone National Park in the U.S., it says that between 1839 and 1994, only 5 people were killed by bears.

I think the best way to learn english is to study. My opinion to this study is that going to he foriegn countries would help you to study, too. There are three camps, Camp Big Apple, Ranch West Camp, and Head Start Splash. They are all held in foriegn countries, and ones are for studying. But which one is the best one to go to? Well, I think it's Camp Big apple, and I'll show you three reasons why I think so.
First, Camp Big Apple focuses on studying. Camp Big Apple is an intensive Academic English camp, and because of that, they focus on 'studying' rather than 'playing'. How about teachers? Compare to Head Start Splash, teachers in Head Start Splash are local, but that's it. It doesn't say any things about teachers except that they're local. So we don't know whether they're smart or not unless we go to the camp.
However, teachers in Camp Big Apple would be smarter than them because they are all Korean Professors who are with at least a Masters degree and some of them even have their Doctorate form an American university. This shows that they are very good at english and math. Although they are not local, they are very smart, and it shows that teachers in Camp Big apple will help you more with you vocabulary, math skills, and english skills needed for important english language test, such as SAT.

Second, it is safe. Even though activities in Ranch West Camp will give you more fun, it will be more dangerous, too. Things like horseback riding, river rafting hiking and mountain biking can cause you a great damage if you get hurt. For example, imagine you were doing horseback riding, and the horse you were riding was surprised and jumped up. Because of that, you would hurt your bones. Also, you can die if horse steps on you 'accidently'. Most of the activities in Ranch West Camp is dangerous.

Lastly, Camp Big Apple is the shortest. You will miss your family and friends the more, the longer you stay. To compare with Head Start Splash, your parents(or parent) will join you, but what about your friends? Also, to compare with Ranch West Camp, there's no way to meet your parents unless they come. It's same to Camp Big Apple, but because Camp Big Apple is shorter, you will miss your parents and friends than Ranch West Camp.

Therefore, I want to go to Camp Big Apple because first, focuses more on studying compared to Head Starts Splash, second, to compare with Ranch West Camp, it's much safer, and last, Camp Big Apple is the shortest camp among the three camps.

What the World Eats

Food Nutrition Eating Health Diet
This is photo of the Revis family of North Carolina in United States. Their favorite foods are spaghetti, potatoes, and sasame chiken. Their food expenditure for one week is $341.98, which is 365,405.63 won in korea.
If you look at the picture, you can see two big boxes of pizza, pasta, meat, hamburgers, coke, french fries, chips, etc. These food contains high percentage of fats. However, they don't look overweighted. I think that's because they eat lots of vegtables and fruits.
Let's compare and contrast their family with my family.
First, they seems to like pizza. I love pizza, and my brother does. My mom likes it too, but because she can't eat meat, she only eats vegitarian pizza. However, my dad doesn't like it. He likes korean foods such as kimchi. I don't like kimchi very much, but I love korean foods like bulgogi. To cotrast, the difference between their family and our family would be that our family eats korea foods, but they don't. Also, to compare them with our family, the similar thing is that both kids in their family loves pizza.

Chain Writing

Once upon a time, there was a dragon. It liked to eat people. It shot fire at the people. Almost everybody died. The fire was so hot, and it made the dragon's scale melt. So the dragon died. However, a new dragon was born and started to kill people again. One day, a stranger came to the village. He introduced himself as a knight. The knight said that he will fight with the drragon. Everyone was surprised because there were many people who challenged for dragon, but none of them came back alive. Villagers told him not to kill the dragon, but the knight did not change his mind. One day before the challenge, the knight asked a wizard to help him win the dragon. The wizard's name was Merlin, and he was known as a very wise man and his prediction were always correct. The knight, who decided to kill the dragon, asked Merlin the way to kill dragon. Merlin said, "You have to kill a boy named Sean. He is controlling the dragon."
So the knight went to kill Sean. the knight killed Sean, but Sean became a zombie. The knight wanted to survive, so he hid in dead dragon's body. He was hungry, so he ate dragon's gut. And finally, the knight turned into a zombie, too.

I crossed the thing out because the thing was disgusting. <<boys did this and I edit them a lot. It was all about guts-out-of-person's-body< I didn't write it on here. I rubbed them all out.
